Today, the Meshchansky District Court of Moscow sentenced municipal deputy Alexei Gorinov to 7 years in prison for using the word “war” during a council meeting while discussing children’s festivities. Alexei has become the first person to receive a real prison sentence under Part 2 of Article 207.3 of the Russian Criminal Code.
We believe this criminal case to be a politically motivated punishment. The Russian Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and prohibits censorship. Both the article under which the deputy was convicted and the sentence itself have nothing to do with either law or common sense.
