Dealing with Police

  1. Ask the police officer to identify themselves and show their badge. This is a legal requirement that police officers must comply with.
  2. You do not have to answer the police’s questions. Ask the officer if you are being detained and inquire about the legal reasons and grounds for this action.
  3. If you are detained, do not resist. Never use force against a police officer, even if they initiate it first: police are very sensitive. This could lead to a criminal case under Article 318 of the Russian Criminal Code for “Use of Violence Against a Representative of Authority.”
  4. Remain polite and courteous. Remember that your active actions to protect your rights and a firm, law-based stance can have both positive and negative effects. Always act based on the specific circumstances to avoid harming yourself.
  5. Do not give any statements. Article 51 of the Russian Constitution grants you this right. You can always refer to this article and refuse to answer police questions. It is highly recommended to do so. Your statements may bring trouble to both yourself and the organizers.

All the information you are required to provide to the police is in your passport. Show it, but do not hand it over.
